The important warranty point

A long-term ceramic coating warranty is not simply a promise based on the number of years printed on the product. The coating must be installed and registered correctly where required, and the vehicle must continue to be maintained in accordance with the applicable Gtechniq warranty and aftercare requirements.

One of the reasons customers choose a professional Gtechniq ceramic coating is the confidence that comes with a recognised product, a defined durability period and, where applicable, a manufacturer-backed warranty. But the words 'five-year' or 'nine-year' need context. They describe a protection system that assumes correct installation and ongoing maintenance, not a vehicle that can be coated once and then ignored.

Surface Works is Gtechniq Accredited and ceramic protection is one of our specialist services. We use Gtechniq products throughout our ceramic coating offering, recommend Gtechniq-approved maintenance products and invite our long-term ceramic customers back for a free annual ceramic coating check-up so we can inspect the paint and how the protection is behaving.

What is the Gtechniq ceramic coating warranty?

Gtechniq's warranty structure provides customers with manufacturer-backed protection for qualifying coating systems subject to the applicable product, installation, registration and maintenance terms.

It is important to distinguish the coating warranty from accidental-damage insurance. A ceramic coating can perform exactly as intended and the vehicle can still acquire stone chips, scratches, dents, bird-lime etching or damage from poor washing. Those events do not automatically mean the coating itself has failed.

The useful way to think about the warranty is as support for the performance of the installed coating system when that system has been applied and maintained correctly.

How long is Crystal Serum Light covered for?

Crystal Serum Light is Surface Works' excellent long-term professional ceramic option, offering protection of up to five years when installed and maintained appropriately.

For many customers, five years is a substantial period and can cover most or all of the time they expect to own a particular vehicle. CSL therefore offers a strong balance between professional ceramic protection, budget and useful ownership duration.

The applicable warranty is not a substitute for maintenance. To preserve both the coating's performance and warranty position, the vehicle needs to be cared for in line with Gtechniq's requirements.

What is different about Crystal Serum Ultra?

Crystal Serum Ultra is Gtechniq's flagship long-term ceramic coating and offers up to nine years of protection. The key difference is not only the longer duration: CSU is an accredited-installer-only product.

Surface Works is Gtechniq Accredited, which means we are approved to install Crystal Serum Ultra within Gtechniq's professional network. CSU is therefore not simply an off-the-shelf nine-year coating that any valeter or DIY enthusiast can offer under the same accredited system.

For customers choosing CSU, the accredited installation route provides a clear relationship between the vehicle owner, Surface Works as the approved installer and Gtechniq as the product manufacturer.

Why does Gtechniq accreditation matter for CSU?

Accreditation is particularly important because Crystal Serum Ultra is restricted to approved professional installers. That protects the product's installation standard and gives the customer a clearer route through the applicable registration and warranty process.

Surface Works' role is not just to apply the liquid. We inspect and prepare the vehicle, install the coating in a professional environment and ensure the selected Gtechniq system is handled as a complete protection service.

The nine-year duration also makes preparation especially important. If a coating is intended to remain for many years, the finish underneath it needs to be assessed carefully before installation.

Do CSL and CSU need to be registered?

Where Gtechniq requires product or warranty registration for the applicable coating system, that registration forms part of establishing the warranty correctly. Customers should retain their installation and product documentation.

Surface Works handles its ceramic work as a named Gtechniq system rather than selling a vague 'ceramic protection package'. That means the customer knows whether CSL or CSU has been installed and what maintenance expectations apply.

If you are unsure what coating is currently on a vehicle you have purchased, any existing paperwork or installer information is useful when we inspect it.

Is the warranty valid if the coating is not maintained?

Correct maintenance matters. Long-term ceramic coatings are designed to withstand normal vehicle use, but they are not maintenance-free surfaces. The applicable warranty is dependent on the coating being cared for in accordance with Gtechniq's requirements.

Allowing heavy contamination to remain indefinitely, using inappropriate aggressive chemicals or repeatedly washing the vehicle in a way that damages the finish can affect coating performance and may also affect the warranty position.

This is why Surface Works treats aftercare as part of the coating service rather than simply handing the keys back after installation and assuming the coating will look after itself for five or nine years.

Why does Surface Works recommend Gtechniq maintenance products?

We only use Gtechniq products within our ceramic coating system, and our recommendation is to continue maintaining the coating with appropriate Gtechniq-approved products.

Using products designed to work with the coating removes unnecessary uncertainty around compatibility and helps the customer follow the manufacturer's intended maintenance process.

This does not mean the car needs a complicated shelf full of chemicals. A good maintenance routine is based on safe washing, appropriate shampoo and decontamination or maintenance products when they are genuinely required.

What should you avoid on a Gtechniq-coated car?

A ceramic coating is chemically resistant, but stronger is not automatically better when choosing cleaning products. There is little benefit in repeatedly exposing the vehicle to highly aggressive chemistry when a suitable maintenance product will do the job.

Automatic brush washes, dirty wash media and dry wiping can also introduce swirl marks. Ceramic coating is extremely thin and does not make clear coat scratch-proof.

If stubborn contamination such as tar, iron fallout or mineral deposits needs specialist treatment, use products and methods appropriate to the Gtechniq coating rather than experimenting with household chemicals or abrasive cleaning.

What is the Surface Works free annual ceramic coating check-up?

Surface Works offers a free ceramic coating check-up every year for our long-term ceramic customers. The purpose is to give the vehicle and protected paint a regular professional assessment rather than waiting until the owner believes something has gone wrong.

We can inspect the paint, look at coating behaviour, identify contamination and discuss how the vehicle has been maintained during the previous year. If water behaviour has reduced, for example, we can consider whether the coating is genuinely compromised or simply masked by road film or mineral contamination.

The check-up also gives customers an opportunity to ask about washing, maintenance products and any changes in how the car is being used. It is part of the long-term relationship we want to have with vehicles we protect.

Does the annual check-up mean the coating needs replacing every year?

No. A five- or nine-year coating should not require annual replacement simply because twelve months have passed. The point of the check-up is inspection and preventative maintenance.

A coating can appear to have lost performance because contamination is sitting on its outer surface. Correct cleaning or decontamination can often restore the behaviour without removing or replacing the underlying coating.

We would rather identify and correct a maintenance issue than unnecessarily sell a customer another ceramic application.

What do we look for during a ceramic coating check?

We are interested in the condition of both the protection and the paint. That includes contamination, water behaviour, visible wash marring, mineral deposits, bird-lime marks and any repaired or replaced panels since the coating was installed.

If the vehicle has had bodyshop work during the year, the repaired area may no longer carry the original coating and can need separate assessment or reapplication.

We also look at how the owner is maintaining the vehicle. Small changes to washing technique or product choice can make a significant difference over a multi-year ownership period.

  • Overall paint and coating condition
  • Signs of bonded contamination or mineral deposits
  • Changes in hydrophobic behaviour
  • Wash-induced marring or poor maintenance technique
  • Panels repaired or repainted since installation
  • Advice on appropriate Gtechniq maintenance products

Does reduced water beading mean the warranty coating has failed?

Not necessarily. Water behaviour is useful feedback, but road film, mineral deposits and product residue can sit on top of a healthy coating and make it appear much less hydrophobic.

The first step should be a thorough safe wash and, where appropriate, compatible decontamination. Only after the surface is genuinely clean should coating failure be considered.

This is another reason our annual check-up is useful: it gives us the opportunity to diagnose the surface rather than relying on beading alone.

What is not normally a ceramic coating warranty issue?

Physical damage and coating performance are different things. Stone chips, scratches, dents and collision damage are not prevented by ceramic coating because the coating does not have the physical thickness of Paint Protection Film.

Likewise, deep bird-lime etching, hard-water damage caused by prolonged neglect, bodyshop repairs and wash-induced scratches may affect the protected surface without indicating a manufacturing defect in the coating.

If a customer has a concern, Surface Works can inspect the vehicle and help establish whether it appears to be contamination, maintenance, accidental damage, paint condition or a genuine coating-performance issue.

What happens if a coated panel is repainted or repaired?

If a panel is repainted, the ceramic coating on that area has effectively been removed with the original surface or bodyshop preparation. The repaired panel needs to be treated as new paint and assessed before protection is reinstated.

The appropriate curing period should be respected according to the bodyshop and paint system before a long-term coating is applied.

Tell us if the vehicle has had repair work since coating. During the annual check-up we can identify which areas may need separate attention.

What if machine polishing is needed after the coating has been installed?

Machine polishing is an abrasive process and can remove or compromise ceramic protection in the area being corrected. If a scratch, etch or other paint defect needs polishing, the coating in that area should not be assumed to remain intact afterwards.

We correct the paint first and then reinstate the appropriate protection where required.

This is why safe washing matters over the long term: avoiding unnecessary swirl marks reduces the need for corrective polishing through the life of the coating.

How should a Gtechniq-coated car be washed?

Start with a thorough pre-wash so loose grit and road film are removed before contact. Use clean wash media, suitable Gtechniq-compatible wash products and careful drying rather than repeatedly rubbing the paint.

Surface Works uses ultra-pure water from Spotless Water as part of our detailing process, helping reduce dissolved mineral residue during the final rinse. At home, prompt drying is particularly useful in hard-water areas.

The aim is consistency. A straightforward safe wash routine carried out regularly is far better for a long-term coating than neglect followed by occasional aggressive cleaning.

Why does Surface Works only use Gtechniq products for ceramic protection?

We want the ceramic system to be coherent from preparation and installation through to maintenance advice. Using Gtechniq products means the coating, supporting products and recommended aftercare come from the same specialist manufacturer.

It also makes the service clearer for the customer. You know exactly what has been installed, what duration and warranty structure applies, and which products we recommend for ongoing care.

For Surface Works, that consistency is preferable to building a ceramic package from unrelated products simply because each individual bottle is popular.

CSL or CSU: which warranty duration should you choose?

For most customers, the choice comes down to ownership period and budget. CSL's up-to-five-year protection is exceptional and may cover the entire time you intend to keep the vehicle.

CSU's up-to-nine-year duration becomes particularly compelling for a long-term keeper, cherished vehicle or customer who specifically wants Gtechniq's flagship accredited coating.

Neither is a poor choice. Surface Works would rather install the appropriate coating over properly prepared paint than compromise preparation simply to move a customer to the longest warranty.

Where does GT1 fit with warranties?

GT1 is our shorter-term enthusiast-friendly Gtechniq ceramic option, offering up to 12 months of protection. It is intended for a different ownership and maintenance cycle from CSL and CSU.

Surface Works can install GT1 following a full decontamination wash, or customers can call us to purchase it for DIY application.

This guide focuses primarily on the long-term CSL and accredited CSU systems because those are the coatings where multi-year warranty and maintenance considerations become especially important.

Our recommendation for protecting the warranty

Know which Gtechniq coating is on the vehicle, retain your installation documentation and follow the applicable Gtechniq warranty and maintenance guidance.

Wash the vehicle safely and regularly, use appropriate Gtechniq-approved maintenance products and deal with bird lime, salt, tar and mineral contamination before they become severe.

Most importantly, use the free Surface Works annual ceramic coating check-up. It gives us the opportunity to inspect the paint and protection every year, advise on maintenance and catch contamination or repair issues before they become larger problems.

Surface Works warranty tip

A five- or nine-year ceramic coating should be treated as a long-term protection system, not a fit-and-forget product. Correct washing, Gtechniq-approved maintenance products and your free annual Surface Works coating check-up are the best way to keep the vehicle and its protection in the condition the warranty expects.
